  1. PictFixer FKEY 1.0 for Excel 3.0 and
  2. PictFixer INIT 1.0 for Excel 3.0

  5. The FKEY will modify any Excel 3.0-generated PICT in the clipboard to permit it top be understood by MacDraw II, Canvas, and DeskDraw., and some other drawing programs.

  7. The INIT attempts to do the same thing automatically, but may not be compatible with all software which generates PICTs.  If you use the INIT, you should not have to use the FKEY.  I have tried the INIT with a bunch of products and it seems to work safely, and is much less hassle than the FKEY.

  9. These utilities are NOT endoresed in any way by Microsoft (of which, no doubt, Excel is a registered trademark), nor are they guaranteed to work in all circumstances.

  20. A brief explanation, and some warnings:
  21.  
  22. We all know by now that several mainstream drawing packages do not understand the PICTs that Excel 3.0 creates when copying a chart or a range of cells (copied with Shift-Copy).
  23.  
  24. My investigations reveal that the following programs DO understand correctly Excel's PICTs.  Word 4.0, MacWrite II, Persuasion 2.0, Solo 1.1., MacDraw 1.9.5, More 3.0.

  26. The following do NOT: Canvas 2.1, MacDraw II 1.1, DeskDraw 3.0, Superpaint 2.0.  I have not been able to try it with newer versions of Canvas or MacDraw.

  28. The enclosed FKEY will check the clipboard for a PICT with the offending command and rectify it, permitting you do copy charts and cell ranges from Excel to the above-mentioned drawing prgrams.

  30. Several caveats for the FKEY: 
  31.  1. Even after using the FKEY, the four offending drawing programs will still read the PICTs of cell ranges slightly incorrectly (they ignore a clipRgn call), so that Excel's gray cell-dividing lines will be too long.  Note that MacDraw 1.9.5 also has this problem.

  33.  2. Don't hit the FKEY before you have switch out of Excel, because Excel may not have yet moved the PICT to the global clipboard.  Thus you should always copy in Excel, switch to the target program, hit the FKEY, then paste.

  35.  3. MacDraw II seems to do something strange with the clipboard, so that if you copy a chart in Excel, then switch to MacDraw, then hit the FKEY, the FKEY won't do anything.  This seems to be because MacDraw has already moved the PICT to a local clipboard of some sort.  To work around this, copy in Excel, switch to any other app or DA except MacDraw, hit the FKEY, then switch to MacDraw.  If you use MacDraw II, you should probably use the INIT.

  38. Caveats about the INIT:
  39.  1. It may not be compatible with some programs.  If you find that pasting some items, especially PICTs containing text, does not seem to be working properly, try turning the PictFixer off.
